I’m not a particularly political person, but I believe strongly in the power of progress and change.
I recently visited New York’s MoMA, where pictures of two modern buildings caught my eye. One was built in 1929, the other in 1932. Not only have these buildings stood the test of time, but they would also still be considered modern and beautiful by today’s standards.
When these buildings were constructed nearly 100 years ago, some people were likely shocked by their minimalist designs and perhaps even disliked them. Yet today, no one would consider these buildings strange. Often, what feels uncomfortably new or different today becomes the norm in the future.
Forward-thinking individuals — whether architects, designers, engineers, or science fiction writers — can often see the future before others. Because of their work, society progresses; without them, we might still be riding in horse-drawn carriages or printing books on movable type.
That’s why, regardless of political views, we should remain open to progress and change (with the right guardrails, of course).
I sincerely hope this election won’t set us back and it doesn’t take another few elections to see a woman and PoC as a US presidential candidate.
