When other founders reach out to me for advice, I try to make it more “pull” than “push” as much as possible.
I can only share my own experiences and stories. It’s up to the listener to decide which parts (if any) to take as advice. If they want, they can pull some stuff from my stories and merge them into their knowledge database (to use Github analogy).
When I try to push things, that’s when I start sounding stupid. No matter how hard I try, I don’t know their business as well as they do. I don’t have the same level of domain knowledge. So, I either say dumb things or offer really generic advice that one can easily find on the internet.
So I try to stick to sharing my own experiences, which are more fun stories to tell anyway. I believe all advice sharing and mentoring should be “pull”, not “push”.
