Why write?
Because if a 6-time NBA MVP can do it, you and I don’t really have any excuses
I stumbled upon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Substack today (link in the comments). Had no idea he was such an incredible writer. He’s authored many books on social justice, written for the Veronica Mars TV series, published three novels and a graphic novel.
As far as I can tell, he writes every single word himself. If a 6x NBA champion, 6x MVP, and the all-time top scorer (until LeBron recently broke the record) writes this prolifically and eloquently – I can only imagine how sought after he is and how packed his calendar must be – we can safely say the world is not entirely fair
Kareem puts it beautifully: “My years as a basketball player defined me, but my years as a writer refined me… I’ve applied the same discipline and dedication to writing that I once applied to sports.”
There goes “why write” – writing teaches us discipline and refines us. If Kareem can do it, so can we – keep writing!
